Silicon Labs may issue signed and encrypted Bluetooth Xpress firmware updatesto add new features, fix bugs, and improve reliability. Firmware updatehistory is available on the Release Notes page.Note that the version of firmware currently running on a BluetoothXpress module can be checked using the ver command, which can be executed either through the serial interface or across anactive Bluetooth connection. For more information about communicatingwith Bluetooth Xpress, see Serial Interface.

This manual page documents briefly the dfu-tool command. Dfu-tool allows a user to write various kinds of firmware onto devices supporting the USB Device Firmware Upgrade protocol. This tool can be used to switch the device from the normal runtime mode to `DFU mode' which allows the user to read and write firmware.
Bluetooth Xpress modules can accept a signed and encrypted firmwareupdate Over-the-air (OTA) and through a Serial Device Firmware Update(DFU) process.
Over The Air (OTA)
The OTA update method uses the Bluetooth wireless link to load new firmwareonto the device. Silicon Labs recommends the OTA method when possible, especially for deployed devices or for devices controlled by end users. The most common way to perform an OTA update is to use the mobile applicationcalled BGX Commander. This mobile application isavailable in both iOS and Android app stores. BGX Commander will establisha connection to the Bluetooth Xpress module and show the user available firmwareversions. The user can select a version and BGX Commander will perform thefirmware update via the Bluetooth connection.
Silicon Labs also provides the BGXpress Frameworklibrary for iOS and Android mobile applications. In addition to providingAPIs to simplify connection and communication with Bluetooth Xpress modules,BGXpress Framework also provides an API to execute an over the air firmwareupdate. This allows a company to create a branded mobile application to supporttheir Bluetooth Xpress-based product. For information now how to get startedwhen using the OTA APIs in the framework, seehere.
Serial DFU
The Serial DFU method uses the hardware serial connection to load new firmwareonto the Bluetooth Xpress module. This method should only be used when OTA isnot possible or not practical, and in a controlled environment such as a factoryproduction test line. Silicon Labs provides a command line DFU utility forperforming serial port updates. For more information about the DFU commandline utility, make a request by email to xpress@silabs.com.
Problems After Upgrade
Normally, there should not be any problem with connection between mobile deviceand a BGX13 device after a firmware upgrade (moving to a higher versionnumber). However, for version 1.2.2045.0
, there was a change to the GATTattribute table. This is a one-time change that was necessary for a featureimprovement and is not expected to happen again in future versions.
Some mobile devices cache the GATT attribute table once it has paired andbonded with a Bluetooth device. Therefore, it may be necessary to clear thestored GATT attribute information. Many times this is known as 'forgetting' adevice.
After performing the update to 1.2.2045.0
, follow this procedure to ensureyour mobile device can again connect to the BGX13 device.
iOS
- Go to Settings-->Bluetooth
- Find the BGX13 device under 'My Devices'
- Tap the 'i' information icon next to the device name
- Tap 'Forget this device'
- Turn off Bluetooth on the phone
- Turn the Bluetooth back on (this clears data that is in the phone memory)
- The next time you use BGX Commander with this device, you will be promptedto pair
Android
Specific instructions for Android vary by device manufacturer. Below are theapproximate instructions needed to clear the GATT cache on an Android device.
- Go to Bluetooth Settings for your device
- Find the BGX13 device in the list of paired devices
- Select the device by pressing the gear or “i” icon next to it for detais.
- Choose “Forget” or “Unpair” to clear the bonding information for the device.
- Turn off Bluetooth on the phone (this clears data that is in the phone memory)
- Turn the Bluetooth back on
- The next time you use BGX Commander with this device, the BGX will pair withyour phone.
Downgrade Considerations
Usually BGX firmware will be upgraded from an older version to a newer version. However, there may be some reason to load an older version than the currentlyrunning version. This is called a 'downgrade'.
Dfu Tool Mac
If you want to downgrade your BGX firmware, there are some considerationsrelated to version compatibility. BGX configuration is saved in memory usinga certain format. Newer version firmware can always read the format of olderfirmware (upgrade). However, older firmware may not understand the storageformat of newer firmware (downgrade), and the BGX configuration may be invalidafter a downgrade.
To avoid any problems occuring with a firmware downgrade, you should alwaysperform a factory reset first. Use the fac command to restorefactory settings.
Downgrade Steps
- access command console via serial port or remote command feature
- issue
get bl a
command to get the BD address (needed later) - issue
fac 12345678ABCD
command; you will need to provide the real BDaddress - perform OTA procedure to load down-level firmware
Review the fac command before performing thisprocedure.
How to put iPhone in DFU mode? How to exit iPhone DFU mode?
iPhone 12 now is released. But some challenging problems may persist on your iPhone even though Apple's design philosophy and technology are moving forward, requiring more comprehensive solutions, such as iPhone DFU mode issues. This post shows you everything about iPhone DFU mode, so that you can learn what iPhone DFU mode is and how to enter or exit iPhone DFU mode appropriately.
iPhone DFU Mode
What is iPhone DFU mode
DFU mode refers to Device Firmware Upgrade mode. It is a commonly convenient approach when you want to restore an unresponsive iPhone or other iOS devices to its original default settings. Many people may be confused between Recovery mode and DFU mode. Compared with Recovery mode, DFU mode is more comprehensive to be used to fix multiple iOS problems. The iPhone DFU Mode lets you make very low-level changes to the software running the device.
When the iPhone, iPad or iPod touch works normally, you don't need to use DFU mode. And sometimes common iPhone problems can be solved by Recovery mode when iPhone has data corrupted, or is stuck in a loop after iOS update, etc. When do you need to put iPhone in DFU mode?
• Jailbreak iPhone or unjailbreak the device.
• Remove a beta iOS version that is expired.
• Downgrade the iOS version on iPhone. In some particular case, an new iOS update may lead to your iPhone not working normally, and putting iPhone into DFU mode can fix the problem.
But you should know first it is risky if you put iPhone in DFU mode. And when you use DFU mode to downgrade the iOS version or jailbreak iphone can violate the device's warranty or damage itself. You'd better thank it over and know responsibility for any bad results before letting iPhone enter the DFU mode.
How to enter iPhone DFU mode (Example: Put iPhone 8 Plus in DFU Mode)
The way to make iPhone into DFU mode is a little more complicated than entering Recovery mode. Be patient when performing DFU mode on iPhone to make sure everything should be OK. The following guide is going to take iPhone 8 Plus DFU mode as the example.
Tool Requirements
•iPhone or any other iOS device
•A Mac or Windows computer with iTunes installed
•The latest iTunes version installed
•A lightning USB cable
Step 1To begin with, connect your iPhone or other iOS device to your Mac or Windows computer. Wait for your iPhone to fully connect, and launch iTunes if it didn't do so automatically since you want to make sure the program is able to fully sync with your iPhone.
Step 2Press down the Sleep/Wake button by the device top right side(on the iPhone 6 and newer, the button is on the right side). And then a slide will show up on screen. Slide to turn off iPhone. But if you are using an iPhone XS/XR/11/12, you need to quicky press the Volume Up button, then quickly press the Volume Down button. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button till the screen blacks out.
Step 3With the device has been shut down, hold again down the Sleep/Power and Home button at the same time. If you have an iPhone 12/11/XS/XR/X/8/7: Hold down Sleep/Wake and the Volume Down button, instead of the Home button.
Step 4Hold the two buttons for 5 seconds. If you hold them over 10 seconds, your device will enter recovery mode, not DFU mode. It is very important to note that when your iPhone either completely boots up or is put into recovery mode with the screen displaying 'Connect to iTunes' during this process, you'll have to start from scratch.
Step 5Release the Sleep/Power button, but keep holding the Home Button (For iPhone 12/11/XS/XR/X/8/7, keep holding the Volume Down button) for another 5 seconds.
Step 6The key to that final step above is to pay close attention to your computer - if an iPhone recovery prompt from within iTunes pops up, release the volume down button and check your iPhone's display. If the screen is black, it means you've successfully entered DFU mode. It may appear that the device is turned off, but it's not. If iTunes recognizes that your iPhone is connected, you're ready to proceed. In a word, if you see any icons or text on your device's screen, you're not in DFU Mode and need to start again.
